What Is an ADHD Evaluation?
An ADHD evaluation is a comprehensive assessment used to determine whether attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder may be affecting focus, organization, impulsivity, emotional regulation, school, work, or daily functioning. At Brownstone Psychiatry, the process may include clinical testing, interviews, symptom rating scales, medical and developmental history, and the Test of Variables of Attention (TOVA) when appropriate.
TOVA is a computerized test that measures attention and response control, but it is only one part of the evaluation. Your provider considers the full picture, including current symptoms, family or school observations, and other mental health or medical conditions, to determine what may be causing the concerns and recommend the right next steps.
Children
ADHD testing for concerns involving attention, behavior, impulsivity, emotional regulation, school performance, homework, routines, and peer relationships.
Teens
Evaluation for attention problems, procrastination, declining grades, emotional changes, impulsive behavior, poor organization, and difficulty managing increasing responsibilities.
Adults
Assessment for chronic disorganization, forgetfulness, poor time management, difficulty completing tasks, impulsivity, work challenges, relationship strain, and possible undiagnosed ADHD.
How ADHD Testing Works
1
Initial Clinical Interview
Your provider will discuss current concerns, symptoms, medical history, developmental history, family history, school or work performance, and previous treatment.
2
Personalized Recommendation
Patients, parents, caregivers, teachers, or other relevant individuals may complete standardized questionnaires to help identify patterns across different environments.
3
Clinical Testing and Assessment
The evaluation includes an objective computerized assessment that measures attention, impulsivity, response control, and other areas related to the patient’s concerns.
4
Review of Results
Your provider reviews the information collected, considers possible alternative explanations, and determines whether the findings support an ADHD diagnosis.
5
Personalized Recommendations
You receive clear feedback and recommendations that may include medication management, therapy, school support, workplace strategies, lifestyle changes, or additional evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions
ADHD testing may be helpful when ongoing problems with focus, organization, impulsivity, behavior, emotional regulation, school, work, or relationships are affecting daily life. These concerns can have several possible causes, so a full evaluation helps determine whether ADHD or another condition may be involved.
An ADHD evaluation may include a clinical interview, review of medical and developmental history, symptom questionnaires, information about school or work performance, and discussion of how concerns appear in different settings. The provider may also evaluate for anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep problems, learning concerns, or other conditions that can resemble ADHD. There is no single test that diagnoses ADHD.
Yes. Brownstone Psychiatry provides ADHD evaluations for children, teenagers, and adults. The process is adjusted based on the patient’s age, symptoms, responsibilities, development, and daily environment. For younger patients, information from parents, caregivers, or teachers may be requested.
The length of an ADHD evaluation depends on the patient’s age, history, symptoms, required questionnaires, and whether additional records or information are needed. Some evaluations may require more than one appointment. Brownstone Psychiatry will explain the expected process when you schedule.

Anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep disorders, learning difficulties, stress, some medical conditions, and other mental health concerns can cause problems with attention, memory, motivation, or behavior. A comprehensive evaluation helps determine what is contributing to the symptoms rather than assuming every attention concern is ADHD.
